Summer High School Baseball: Sign Language to Be Used for the First Time at Koshien Opening Ceremony

At Koshien Stadium, two high school students, Risa Yoshida and Mone Utsu, will introduce the competing teams using sign language for the first time during the opening ceremony. Their hand movements will also be shown on the stadium's large screen, aiming to convey the players' performances to deaf and hard-of-hearing spectators. Can they bridge the gap between sound and silence on baseball's grandest stage?

Next month, there will be a tournament at Koshien Stadium to determine the top high school baseball team. Sign language will be used for the first time during the opening ceremony and other events. Sign language is a form of communication where people who are deaf or hard of hearing use hand movements. They are also considering showing sign language on the stadium's large screen. During the opening ceremony, two high school students who can use sign language will introduce the participating schools. Risa Yoshida from Saibi Heisei Secondary Education School in Ehime Prefecture, who will be using sign language, said, 'I am very happy to be able to do this important job for the first time at Koshien.' Mone Utsu said, 'I will do my best to convey the wonderful performances of the players to many people.' Sign language will also be used during the closing ceremony.
