夜明け前の高円寺は、まだ静かでした。路地には街灯の光だけが落ちていて、アパートの階段には誰もいません。その三階の扉に、わずかな隙間がありました。
Koenji before dawn was still quiet. Only the glow of streetlights fell on the alleyways, and no one was on the apartment stairwell. In the door on the third floor, there was a small gap.
その隙間から、一匹のトラ猫がするりと抜け出しました。コンクリートの踊り場に前足をつき、しばらくそこで止まりました。鼻を動かし、朝の空気を確かめるように、じっとしていました。
Through that gap, a single tabby cat slipped out. It placed its front paws on the concrete landing and stopped there for a while. It stayed still, moving its nose, as if checking the morning air.
猫は階段をゆっくりと降りて、路地へ出ました。高円寺の朝は、にしては珍しく風がなく、落ち葉も動きませんでした。猫は塀に沿って歩き始め、隣の家の庭へと入り込みました。
The cat slowly descended the stairs and came out onto the alleyway. For a Koenji morning, it was unusually still, with no wind and not even a fallen leaf stirring. The cat began walking along a wall and slipped into the garden of the neighboring house.
庭には植木鉢が並んでいて、猫はその間を慎重に歩きました。どんなに小さな音でも、猫の耳はすぐに反応しました。物干し竿が風もないのに少し揺れると、猫はその場でぴたりと止まりました。
The garden had flowerpots lined up, and the cat walked carefully between them. No matter how small a sound, the cat's ears reacted immediately. When the laundry pole swayed slightly despite there being no wind, the cat froze right where it stood.
しばらくして、猫は再び歩き出しました。いくつかの路地を抜けると、高円寺の商店街のアーケードに出ました。シャッターが閉まった店が並ぶ中、猫は商店街の真ん中をゆっくりと歩きました。
After a while, the cat started walking again. Passing through several alleyways, it came out into the covered shopping arcade of Koenji. Amid the rows of shuttered shops, the cat walked slowly down the middle of the arcade.
アーケードを抜けた先に、小さな神社がありました。猫は石段を一段ずつ登り、境内に入りました。境内には鳩が数羽いましたが、猫の姿を見てすぐに飛び立ちました。猫は狛犬の台座のそばに座り、しばらく周りを見回しました。
Beyond the far end of the arcade, there was a small shrine. The cat climbed the stone steps one by one and entered the grounds. There were several pigeons in the grounds, but upon seeing the cat they immediately flew away. The cat sat beside the pedestal of a stone guardian dog and looked around for a while.
午前中のうちに、猫の飼い主は扉の隙間に気づきました。部屋の中に猫がいないとわかると、すぐに外へ出て名前を呼びながら近所を歩き始めました。いくら呼んでも、返事はありませんでした。
During the morning, the cat's owner noticed the gap in the door. Upon realizing the cat was not in the room, she immediately went outside and began walking through the neighborhood, calling its name. No matter how much she called, there was no response.
午後になると、空が急に暗くなりました。雨は最初は小雨でしたが、すぐに強くなりました。猫は神社の軒下に走り込み、そこで雨宿りをしました。軒下は狭いながらも、雨は当たりませんでした。
When afternoon came, the sky suddenly darkened. The rain started as a light drizzle but quickly grew stronger. The cat ran under the shrine eave and sheltered there from the rain. The space under the eave was narrow, but the rain did not reach it.
雨が降り続ける中、猫はアーケードへ戻ろうとしました。しかし、アーケードの出口に一匹の野良犬がいました。体が大きく、猫に気づいてこちらを向いています。猫は動けませんでした。
While the rain continued to fall, the cat tried to return to the arcade. However, at the arcade exit there was a stray dog. It was large-bodied, and having noticed the cat, it was turned toward it. The cat could not move.
猫は引き返し、神社の裏手へと回りました。そこから見知らぬ路地が続いていました。たとえ雨が強くなっても、猫は前に進むしかありませんでした。細い路地を曲がり、また曲がり、だんだん遠くへ来てしまいました。
The cat turned back and went around to the rear of the shrine. From there, unfamiliar alleyways continued. Even if the rain were to grow stronger, the cat had no choice but to keep moving forward. It turned down a narrow alley, then turned again, and gradually came further and further away.
飼い主は商店街でも猫を探しました。アーケードの店主として長年働いている男性に声をかけると、「猫なら見ていませんよ」という返事でした。割に広い商店街でも、猫の姿はどこにも見当たりませんでした。
The owner searched for the cat in the shopping district as well. When she called out to a man who had worked for many years as a shopkeeper in the arcade, the reply was, 'I haven't seen any cat.' Even in the shopping arcade, which was fairly large, the cat's figure was nowhere to be found.
夕方近くになっても、雨はやみませんでした。猫は長い回り道の末に、再び神社の境内へと戻ってきました。軒下に入ると、そこにまだ雨がしのげる場所がありました。猫は体を丸めて、そこに座り込みました。
Even as evening approached, the rain did not stop. After a long detour, the cat came back again to the shrine grounds. When it entered under the eave, there was still a place there to shelter from the rain. The cat curled its body and settled down there.
飼い主は最後にもう一度だけ神社へ向かいました。どんなに疲れていても、探すのをやめることはとは限らない、と自分に言い聞かせながら、石段を登りました。境内に入ると、軒下に小さな影が見えました。
The owner headed to the shrine one last time. Telling herself that no matter how tired she was, giving up the search was not necessarily the right thing to do, she climbed the stone steps. When she entered the grounds, she could see a small shadow under the eave.
「いた。」飼い主は小さな声でそう言いました。猫は軒下でじっとしていました。飼い主は静かに近づき、ゆっくりと手を伸ばしました。猫は逃げませんでした。飼い主は猫を抱き上げ、着ていたジャケットで包みました。
'There you are.' The owner said so in a quiet voice. The cat was staying perfectly still under the eave. The owner approached quietly and slowly reached out her hand. The cat did not run. The owner picked up the cat and wrapped it in the jacket she was wearing.
飼い主は猫を抱えたまま、来た道を戻りました。高円寺の路地に街灯がともり始めていました。雨はまだ続いていましたが、ジャケットの中の猫は濡れずにいました。アパートの前に着くと、飼い主は階段を登りました。
The owner, still holding the cat, retraced the way she had come. Streetlights were beginning to come on in the alleyways of Koenji. The rain was still continuing, but the cat inside the jacket was staying dry. When they arrived in front of the apartment, the owner climbed the stairs.
部屋に戻ると、飼い主はすぐに扉に鍵をかけ、さらに新しい留め金を取り付けました。猫として自由に外を歩き回ることは、この猫にはもう簡単にはできません。しかし、猫がそれを理解しているかどうかとは限りません。
Upon returning to the room, the owner immediately locked the door and also attached a new latch. As a cat, freely roaming outside is no longer something this cat can easily do. However, whether the cat understands that is not necessarily certain.
猫は窓辺に座り、外を眺めていました。高円寺の街に、一つずつ街灯がともっていきます。窓ガラスには雨粒が伝い、その向こうに光が滲んでいました。猫はしっぽをゆっくりと動かしながら、そこに座り続けていました。
The cat sat by the window, gazing outside. In the town of Koenji, streetlights were coming on one by one. Raindrops ran down the window glass, and beyond them, lights blurred softly. The cat continued to sit there, slowly moving its tail.
