サヤは京都の古い料理屋で働いています。毎朝早く起きて、厨房の掃除をするのが日課です。先輩の料理人たちはとても厳しく、サヤはいつも緊張しています。それでも、サヤは料理人になる夢を諦めていません。
Saya works at an old Kyoto restaurant. Waking up early every morning and cleaning the kitchen is her daily routine. The senior chefs are very strict, and Saya is always tense. Even so, Saya has not given up on her dream of becoming a chef.
サヤには小さな秘密がありました。毎晩、日記に目標を書くようにしていました。「今日は出汁を丁寧に引く」「先輩に怒られても落ち込まないようにする」。料理の目標と気持ちの目標を、少しずつ書き続けていました。
Saya had a small secret. Every night, she made sure to write goals in her journal. 'Today, draw the dashi carefully.' 'Make sure not to feel down even if a senior scolds me.' She kept writing, little by little, both cooking goals and emotional goals.
ある日、先輩のリョウが包丁の使い方についてサヤに厳しく言いました。「何度教えたんだ。もっとちゃんとしろ」。サヤは謝りましたが、胸が痛かったです。こんなに努力しているのに、なかなか認めてもらえません。
One day, senior chef Ryo spoke harshly to Saya about her knife technique. 'How many times have I told you. Do it properly.' Saya apologized, but her chest ached. Even though she was trying so hard, she could not seem to be recognized.
その夜、サヤは日記にこう書きました。「怒られても前を向くようにする。毎日一つずつ成長する」。書いていると、少し気持ちが楽になりました。この日記は自分だけのものだと思っていました。
That night, Saya wrote in her journal: 'Make sure to look forward even when scolded. Grow one step at a time every day.' As she wrote, her feelings lightened a little. She thought this journal was hers alone.
翌朝、サヤは日記を厨房に持ってきてしまいました。忙しくてポケットに入れたまま忘れていたのです。休憩中に、同僚のカナが日記を見つけました。
The next morning, Saya had accidentally brought her journal to the kitchen. She had been busy and forgot it was still in her pocket. During the break, her coworker Kana found the journal.
カナは悪気なく、声に出して読んでしまいました。「怒られても前を向くようにする、毎日一つずつ成長する、って書いてある。かわいい！」。厨房にいた全員がサヤを見ました。サヤの顔が真っ赤になりました。
Kana read it aloud without any bad intention. 'It says: make sure to look forward even when scolded, grow one step at a time every day. How sweet!' Everyone in the kitchen looked at Saya. Saya's face turned completely red.
サヤは恥ずかしくて、何も言えませんでした。弱い自分を見せてしまった、と思いました。泣きそうになっていると、厨房の奥から料理長のヒサオが歩いてきました。
Saya was so embarrassed she could not say anything. She thought she had shown her weak side. Just as she was about to cry, head chef Hisao walked over from the back of the kitchen.
ヒサオはサヤの日記をそっと受け取り、静かに言いました。「私も若い頃、同じことをしたことがある。毎日小さな目標を書いていた」。その言葉に、サヤは驚きました。
Hisao quietly took Saya's journal and said calmly: 'When I was young, I have done the same thing before. I wrote small daily goals.' At those words, Saya was surprised.
ヒサオは続けました。「本当の料理人は、料理だけでなく、心も少しずつ鍛えるものだ。君の日記は恥ずかしいものじゃない。毎日目標を持てるようになることが、一番大切なんだよ」。
Hisao continued: 'A true chef trains not only cooking but also the heart, little by little. Your journal is nothing to be ashamed of. Coming to be able to have a daily goal is the most important thing.'
サヤはヒサオにもっと話してほしいと思いましたが、彼は静かに厨房へ戻っていきました。でも、その言葉はサヤの胸に深く残りました。恥ずかしかった気持ちが、少しずつ誇りに変わっていきました。
Saya wanted Hisao to tell her more, but he quietly returned to the kitchen. Still, his words stayed deep in her heart. The feeling of embarrassment slowly, little by little, changed into pride.
それからサヤは、日記のことを隠さないようにしました。「私、毎日目標を書いているんです」と自然に言えるようになりました。カナも「私もやってみる」と言いました。サヤの小さな習慣が、仲間に広がっていきました。
After that, Saya made sure not to hide her journal. She came to be able to say naturally, 'I write goals every day.' Kana also said, 'I'll try it too.' Saya's small habit spread to her coworkers.
