The Correct Way to Fold - 正しいたたみ方

アオイは老舗旅館でアルバイトを始めたばかりでした。今日の仕事はタオルのたたみ方を覚えることです。「やってみます！」と、アオイは元気よく手を挙げました。

Aoi had just started a part-time job at a long-established ryokan. Today's job was to learn how to fold towels. 'I'll give it a try!' Aoi raised her hand cheerfully.

先輩スタッフのミズキさんが近づいてきました。「アオイさん、タオルのたたみ方によって、お客様が旅館の質を判断されるんですよ」と、静かに言いました。

Senior staff member Mizuki came over. 'Aoi, depending on how the towels are folded, guests judge the quality of the ryokan,' she said quietly.

アオイは少し驚きました。タオルをたたむだけで、そんなに大切なことがわかるのでしょうか。「はい、しっかり覚えます」と、気持ちを引き締めました。

Aoi was a little surprised. Could something as simple as folding a towel really reveal so much? 'Yes, I'll make sure to learn it properly,' she said, pulling herself together.

ミズキさんによると、このたたみ方は旅館が開業した頃から続く伝統だそうです。端を揃えて、決まった幅で三回折る。それだけですが、とても丁寧な作業でした。

According to Mizuki, this folding method was a tradition that had continued since the ryokan first opened. Align the edges, fold three times at a fixed width. That was all, but it was very careful work.

アオイはミズキさんの手の動きにしたがって、同じようにたたんでみました。けれども、なかなかうまくいきません。端がずれて、形も少し歪んでしまいました。

Following Mizuki's hand movements, Aoi tried folding in the same way. However, it didn't go well at all. The edges were misaligned and the shape came out slightly crooked.

ミズキさんの見本に比べて、アオイのたたんだタオルはずいぶん見栄えが違いました。「難しいですね…」とアオイはつぶやきました。

Compared to Mizuki's model, Aoi's folded towel looked noticeably different. 'It's difficult, isn't it...' Aoi murmured.

「大丈夫ですよ。繰り返すことによって、必ず上手になりますから」ミズキさんはやさしく笑いました。アオイはもう一度、タオルを手に取りました。

'It's alright. By repeating it, you'll definitely get better,' Mizuki said with a gentle smile. Aoi picked up the towel once more.

アオイは何度も練習しました。練習を重ねるにつれて、手の動きが少しずつ慣れてきました。端の揃え方も、折る幅も、だんだんと安定してきました。

Aoi practiced many times. As she repeated the practice, her hand movements gradually became more natural. The way she aligned the edges and the width of her folds became more and more stable.

時間が経つにつれて、アオイの集中力も上がっていきました。タオルの感触も、最初とは違って感じられます。「あ、これかも…」と小さく声が出ました。

As time passed, Aoi's concentration also increased. The feel of the towel felt different from the beginning. 'Ah, maybe this is it...' a small sound escaped her.

ミズキさんが教えてくれたとおりに、アオイはゆっくりと丁寧にたたみました。端は揃っていて、幅も均一です。置いたとき、形がきれいに整いました。

Exactly as Mizuki had taught her, Aoi folded slowly and carefully. The edges were aligned and the width was even. When she set it down, the shape came out beautifully.

ミズキさんは見本のタオルとアオイのタオルを並べました。「同じですね」と、少し驚いた様子で言いました。アオイは胸がじんわりと温かくなりました。

Mizuki placed the model towel and Aoi's towel side by side. 'They look the same,' she said, sounding a little surprised. Aoi felt a gentle warmth spreading in her chest.

「お客様もきっと喜んでくださいますよ」とミズキさんは言いました。アオイには、タオルのたたみ方が旅館の心そのものだと、ようやく感じられました。

'The guests will surely be pleased,' said Mizuki. Aoi finally felt that the way to fold a towel was the very heart of the ryokan.
