On Shodoshima Island in Kagawa Prefecture, thirty-nine colossal pumpkins from across Japan converge for a single weigh-in. Some are so heavy they must be lifted by forklift onto the scale, all vying for the title of the heaviest. When Mr. Tanabe of Chiba Prefecture steps forward with his entry, the true weight of a difficult growing season finally comes to light.

日本にっぽんでいちばん重おもいカボチャを決きめる大会たいかいが、香川県かがわけんの小豆島しょうどしまでありました。
日本にっぽんのいろいろな場所ばしょから、39のカボチャが集あつまりました。
1つずつ、はかりで重おもさを調しらべます。重おもすぎるカボチャは人ひとの力ちからではかりにのせることができません。このためフォークリフトという機械きかいを使つかいました。
いちばん重おもかったのは千葉県ちばけんの田邉たなべ憲明のりあきさんが育そだてたカボチャです。454.5kgありました。
田邉たなべさんは「すごくうれしいです。今年ことしは晴はれた日ひが少すくなくて大変たいへんでした。来年らいねんはもっと大おおきいカボチャを作つくりたいです」と喜よろこんでいました。

A competition to determine the heaviest pumpkin in Japan was held on Shodoshima Island in Kagawa Prefecture. Thirty-nine pumpkins gathered from various places in Japan. The weight of each pumpkin is measured using a scale. Pumpkins that are too heavy cannot be placed on the scale by human strength alone, so a machine called a forklift was used. The heaviest pumpkin was grown by Mr. Noriaki Tanabe from Chiba Prefecture. It weighed 454.5 kg. Mr. Tanabe expressed his joy, saying, 'I am very happy. This year was tough because there were few sunny days. I want to grow an even bigger pumpkin next year.'
