朝の京都駅は、観光客の声と荷物の音で満ちていました。コンコースに差し込む光が、タイルの床を白く照らしています。観光案内コーナーの前に、一人の女性が立っていました。
Kyoto Station in the morning was filled with the voices of tourists and the sounds of luggage. Light streaming into the concourse illuminated the tile floor in white. In front of the tourist information corner, a single woman was standing.
サエは三十代半ばで、ベージュのトレンチコートを着ていました。折り畳まれた地図を両手で持ち、ローリングスーツケースは足元に寄せてあります。地図の表紙には「一人旅向けの京都ガイド」と書かれていました。
Sae was in her mid-thirties, wearing a beige trench coat. She held a folded map in both hands, and her rolling suitcase was leaned against her leg. On the cover of the map was written: 'Kyoto Guide for Solo Travelers.'
でも、彼女のバッグの中にはもう一枚の地図がありました。五年前に夫と一緒に作った手書きの旅程表です。二人向けに計画されたそのルートは、結局一度も使われないままでした。
But inside her bag, there was one more map. It was a handwritten itinerary she had made together with her husband five years ago. That route, planned for the two of them, had ended up never being used.
離婚してから二年が経ちました。サエはずっとこの旅を先延ばしにしてきましたが、今年の春、ようやく一人でやり直す決心をしたのです。代わりに誰かを連れてくるつもりはありませんでした。
Two years had passed since the divorce. Sae had kept putting off this trip, but in the spring of this year, she had finally made up her mind to redo it on her own. She had no intention of bringing someone else instead.
最初の目的地は二条城でした。サエは地下鉄東西線に乗り、二条城前駅で降りました。石垣の前に立ったとき、昔の記憶が急に込み上げてきました。「ここで彼と写真を撮るはずだった。」
The first destination was Nijo Castle. Sae took the Tozai Subway Line and got off at Nijojo-mae Station. When she stood before the stone wall, old memories suddenly welled up inside her. 'This is where I was supposed to take a photo with him.'
それでも、サエは城の中を最後まで歩き通しました。観光客向けの音声ガイドを借りて、一人で各部屋を見て回ったのです。誰かと感想を言い合う必要はない、と自分に言い聞かせながら。
Even so, Sae walked through the castle all the way to the end. She borrowed an audio guide intended for tourists and went around each room on her own, all the while telling herself that she had no need to share impressions with anyone.
昼過ぎ、サエは錦市場に向かいました。活気ある雰囲気の中、色とりどりの食材や惣菜が並んでいます。彼女は一人分の焼き鳥を買い、その場で食べました。二本ではなく、一本だけ。
After noon, Sae headed to Nishiki Market. Amid the lively atmosphere, colorful ingredients and prepared dishes were lined up. She bought a single-serving skewer of yakitori and ate it right there. Not two, just one.
夕方には祇園に立ち寄りました。石畳の通りを歩きながら、サエは古い地図を取り出しました。「祇園・舞妓見学」という文字の横に、元夫の字で「絶対行こう」と書き込まれていました。
In the evening she stopped by Gion. While walking along the cobblestone street, Sae took out the old map. Next to the words 'Gion: Maiko Sightseeing,' her ex-husband had written in his handwriting: 'We're definitely going.'
その文字を見た瞬間、胸が締め付けられました。でもサエは深呼吸をして、地図を丁寧に折り直しました。感情的になるのではなく、ただ前に進もうと思ったのです。
The moment she saw those words, her chest tightened. But Sae took a deep breath and carefully refolded the map. She thought not to become emotional, but simply to move forward.
翌朝、サエは伏見稲荷大社に向かいました。JR奈良線で稲荷駅まで行き、駅を出るとすぐに鳥居の列が見えました。朱色が朝の光の中で鮮やかに輝いています。
The next morning, Sae headed to Fushimi Inari Taisha. She took the JR Nara Line to Inari Station, and as soon as she exited the station, she could see the rows of torii gates. The vermilion shone vividly in the morning light.
古い地図には「伏見稲荷・二人で頂上まで」と書かれていました。これが最後の共有スポットでした。サエはその文字をしっかり見つめ、それからペンを取り出しました。
On the old map was written: 'Fushimi Inari: to the summit together, both of us.' This was the final shared spot. Sae stared hard at those words, then took out her pen.
サエはその文字に、ゆっくりと線を引き消しました。書き直すというより、終わらせる気持ちでした。それから余白に、新しい文字を書き上げました。「嵐山・一人で渡月橋へ」
Sae slowly drew a line through those words. It felt less like rewriting and more like bringing something to a close. Then, in the margin, she finished writing new words. 'Arashiyama: to Togetsukyo Bridge, alone.'
ペンをしまい、サエは歩き始めました。千本鳥居の中に入ると、朱色のトンネルが山の奥へと続いています。観光客向けのルートを外れ、人の少ない道を選びました。
She put away her pen and began to walk. Entering the Senbon Torii, the vermilion tunnel continued deep into the mountain. She veered off the route intended for tourists and chose a path with fewer people.
急な石段を一段一段、サエは自分のペースで登り続けました。誰かに合わせる必要も、誰かを待つ必要もありません。この山は今日、完全に自分向きの場所でした。
Step by step up the steep stone stairs, Sae kept climbing at her own pace. There was no need to match anyone's speed, no need to wait for anyone. Today, this mountain was entirely a place suited for her alone.
最後の鳥居をくぐったとき、木々の間から京都の街が見えました。サエは立ち止まり、しばらくその景色を眺めました。地図を折り畳んで、トレンチコートのポケットに収め込みました。
When she passed through the last torii gate, Kyoto's cityscape came into view through the trees. Sae stopped and gazed at the scenery for a while. She folded the map and tucked it deep into the pocket of her trench coat.
