夕方のファミリーレストランです。お客さんはまだ少なく、店の中は静かでした。厨房のそばで、ヒナは布巾でテーブルを拭いていました。先週から働き始めたばかりの、新しいアルバイトです。
It is a family restaurant in the evening. There were still few customers, and inside the shop was quiet. Near the kitchen, Hina was wiping the tables with a cloth. She is a new part-timer who has only just started working since last week.
ヒナの後ろのロッカーのあたりで、二人の店員が小さな声で話していました。時々、こちらをちらっと見ます。「ねえ、店長の財布、見た?」「知らない。本当に消えたの?」
Around the lockers behind Hina, two staff members were talking in low voices. Now and then they glanced over here. "Hey, did you see the manager's wallet?" "No. Did it really disappear?"
店長の財布が見つからない、というのです。今朝からその話で、店の中はなんとなく落ち着きません。ヒナは聞こえていましたが、聞こえないふりをして、手を動かし続けました。
The manager's wallet could not be found, they were saying. Since this morning, because of that talk, the shop had been somehow unsettled. Hina could hear it, but pretending she could not hear, she kept moving her hands.
「新しい子が来てからだよね」と、一人が言いました。ヒナの心がちくっとしました。でも、振り返ろうとはしませんでした。騒ぎを大きくするつもりはなかったのです。
"It's been since the new girl came, right," one of them said. Hina's heart stung a little. But she did not try to turn around. She had no intention of making the fuss bigger.
新しい人が疑われるのは、よくあることです。ここでは、困ったことがあれば店長に相談することになっています。ヒナはそうするつもりで、ただ静かに仕事を続けました。
For a new person to be suspected is a common thing. Here, it is the rule that if there is any trouble, you consult the manager. Hina, with the intention of doing that, simply continued her work quietly.
塩の入れ物を一つずつ確認して、足りないものを足していきます。お皿を運び、空いたコップを下げます。二人の店員は、まだヒナと目を合わせようとしませんでした。
Checking the salt shakers one by one, she added what was lacking. She carried plates and cleared away the empty glasses. The two staff members still would not try to meet Hina's eyes.
厨房では、一番年上のコックさんが料理を作っていました。いつもほとんど話さない人です。ヒナとも、まだ一度も話したことがありませんでした。
In the kitchen, the oldest cook was making food. He is a person who almost never talks. With Hina too, he had not spoken even once yet.
そのコックさんが、急に大きな声を出しました。「おい、思い出した!」みんなが驚いて、厨房のほうを見ました。ヒナも手を止めました。
That cook suddenly raised a loud voice. "Hey, I remembered!" Everyone, surprised, looked toward the kitchen. Hina too stopped her hands.
「今朝、店長が財布を持ったまま、ゴミ箱の上で何か捨てていた。あのとき、財布も一緒に落としたんだ。俺、見てたよ。」店の中が、しんとなりました。
"This morning, the manager, still holding his wallet, was throwing something away over the trash bin. At that moment, he dropped the wallet along with it. I saw it." Inside the shop fell silent.
二人の店員が、あわててゴミ箱に走りました。ヒナも近づきました。袋を開けてみると、紙くずの間に、黒い財布が見えました。「あった!」と、誰かが叫びました。
The two staff members hurriedly ran to the trash bin. Hina also came close. When they opened the bag and looked, between the scraps of paper, a black wallet was visible. "It's here!" someone shouted.
店長を呼ぶために、一人が走っていきました。さっきまでヒナを疑っていた二人は、急に気まずそうな顔になりました。誰も、ヒナと目を合わせようとしません。
To call the manager, one of them ran off. The two who had been suspecting Hina until just now suddenly took on awkward faces. No one would try to meet Hina's eyes.
ヒナは、何も言いませんでした。怒るつもりだったわけではありません。ただ、胸の中が少し軽くなりました。ふと厨房を見ると、コックさんがこちらを見ていました。
Hina said nothing. It was not that she had been planning to get angry. Only, the inside of her chest became a little lighter. When she glanced at the kitchen, the cook was looking this way.
コックさんは、ヒナに向かって、片目をつぶってみせました。それで、ヒナは分かりました。あの人は、知らないふりをしながら、ずっと自分を見ていてくれたのです。
The cook, facing Hina, winked at her. With that, Hina understood. That person, while pretending not to know, had been watching out for her all along.
ヒナも、小さく頭を下げました。それから、また布巾を取って、テーブルを拭き始めました。厨房からは、油の音と、コックさんの大きな背中が見えていました。
Hina too lowered her head a little. Then she took up the cloth again and began wiping the tables. From the kitchen, the sound of oil and the cook's broad back were visible.
