When neighborhood cats demand that D explain why he refuses to hunt, he invites them to see for themselves.

夜明けです。窓の下に温かい場所があって、そこに一匹の灰色の猫が座っていました。名前はDといいます。なめらかな毛で、目は静かな黄緑色です。長い尻尾を体にきれいに巻いていました。
It is dawn. Below the window there is a warm spot, and a gray cat was sitting there. His name is D. He has smooth fur, and his eyes are a calm yellow-green. He had his long tail neatly curled around his body.
ちょうどその時、小さなネズミが窓のそばを走って通りました。普通の猫なら、すぐに飛びかかるはずです。でもDは、足を一本も動かそうとしませんでした。ただ静かに見ているだけです。
Just then, a small mouse ran past beside the window. A normal cat would surely pounce right away. But D would not try to move even a single paw. He was just watching quietly.
その日の午後、近所の猫たちがDを神社の石段に呼び出しました。茶色の猫やぶちの猫が、こわい顔で並んでいます。「君は、どうして狩りをしないんだ」と一匹が聞きました。
That afternoon, the neighborhood cats summoned D to the stone steps of the shrine. A brown cat, a spotted cat, and others were lined up with stern faces. "Why don't you hunt?" one of them asked.
「猫は、みんな狩りをすることになっているんだ」と年取った猫が言いました。「昔からの決まりだ。獲物を捕まえない猫なんて、猫じゃない」。ほかの猫たちも、うんうんとうなずきました。
"All cats are supposed to hunt," said an old cat. "It's a rule from long ago. A cat that doesn't catch prey isn't a cat." The other cats nodded along in agreement.
Dは反対するつもりでしたが、ここでけんかをしても意味がありません。だから、賛成するふりをしました。「分かったよ。じゃあ、本当の獲物を見せてあげる。明日の朝、神社の裏に来てくれ」。
D had intended to object, but there was no point in fighting here. So he pretended to agree. "All right. Then I'll show you real prey. Come behind the shrine tomorrow morning."
猫たちは喜びました。「ついにDも狩りをする気になったのか」。みんな、たくさんのネズミを捕まえるつもりで、その夜はよく眠れませんでした。爪をとぐ音が、あちこちで聞こえました。
The cats were delighted. "So D has finally decided to hunt." Everyone planned to catch lots of mice, and that night they could hardly sleep. The sound of claws being sharpened could be heard here and there.
次の朝、猫たちはDのあとについて神社の裏へ回りました。狩りを始めるつもりで、みんな体を低くしています。Dは草の間を進んで、古い石の門の奥へと案内しました。
The next morning, the cats followed behind D around to the back of the shrine. Intending to begin the hunt, everyone crouched low. D moved through the grass and led them deep behind an old stone gate.
門の奥には、草の伸びた小さな庭がありました。木の下に、お供えのご飯やパンのかけらが落ちています。そして、その食べ物のまわりには、何匹ものネズミがいました。
Behind the gate there was a small garden with tall grass. Under a tree, offerings of rice and bits of bread lay fallen. And around that food were many mice.
驚いたことに、ネズミたちは逃げようとしませんでした。猫が来たのに、平気でパンを食べ続けています。猫たちは足を止めて、どうしていいか分からない顔をしました。
Surprisingly, the mice did not try to run away. Even though the cats had come, they calmly kept eating the bread. The cats stopped in their tracks, with faces that didn't know what to do.
「ここでは、誰も追いかけないんだ」とDが言いました。「食べ物はじゅうぶんある。ネズミも猫も、けんかをする必要がない。だから、僕は狩りをしようとしないんだよ」。
"Here, no one chases anyone," said D. "There is plenty of food. Neither the mice nor the cats need to fight. That's why I don't try to hunt."
「狩りをするのが猫の決まりだと思っていた」と茶色の猫がつぶやきました。獲物を捕まえるつもりで来たのに、その獲物が逃げないのです。決まりなんて、ここでは初めから必要なかったのです。
"I thought hunting was the cats' rule," the brown cat muttered. They had come intending to catch prey, yet the prey wouldn't flee. The rule had never been necessary here from the start.
猫たちは静かに座って、ネズミがかけらをかじるのを見ていました。まだ信じない猫も何匹かいましたが、誰も追いかけようとはしませんでした。庭はとても静かでした。
The cats sat quietly and watched the mice nibble the crumbs. There were still a few cats who didn't believe it, but no one tried to chase. The garden was very quiet.
それから、神社の裏では狩りの決まりはなくなりました。猫とネズミが同じ庭で過ごすことになったのです。Dは木漏れ日の中で、ゆっくりと顔を洗いました。
After that, the hunting rule disappeared behind the shrine. The cats and mice came to share the same garden. In the dappled sunlight, D slowly washed his face.
