A high school girl rescues a dying turtle at a sweltering Kyoto festival, but where can she find water to save it?
JLPT N4 stories are longer and bring in te-form, casual speech, conditionals, and chained verbs. The narratives start adding slight twists — family, hobbies, work, and school told with more nuance.
夏の京都でのことです。大きなお寺は、お祭りの人でいっぱいでした。その日はとても暑くて、道のアスファルトも焼けるように熱くなっていました。にぎやかな人々の足元に、小さな亀がいました。
It was summer in Kyoto. The large temple was full of festival people. That day was very hot, and the asphalt on the road was also burning hot. At the feet of the lively crowd, there was a small turtle.
高校生のマイは、一人で歩いている時にその亀を見つけました。亀は体が乾いていて、全く元気がありませんでした。「この亀は、誰かに助けてほしいのかもしれない。私が助けてあげたい」と、マイは思いました。
High school student Mai found that turtle while walking alone. The turtle's body was dry, and it had no energy at all. "This turtle might want someone to help it. I want to help it," Mai thought.
マイはすぐに亀を拾って、お寺の中にある池へ走りました。しかし、お祭りの間、池の周りのフェンスには鍵がかかっていました。マイは亀を池に入れることができませんでした。
Mai immediately picked up the turtle and ran to the pond inside the temple. However, during the festival, the fence around the pond was locked. Mai could not put the turtle in the pond.
困ったマイが周りを見ると、金魚すくいのお店がありました。おじいさんが静かに座っていましたが、お客さんは誰もいませんでした。お店の横には、きれいな水が入った大きな水槽がありました。
When a troubled Mai looked around, there was a goldfish scooping shop. An old man was sitting quietly, but there were no customers. Next to the shop, there was a large tank filled with clean water.
「急にお願いしてすみません。この亀を、その水槽に入れていただけませんか」と、マイは頼みました。おじいさんは少し驚きましたが、「いいよ」と言って、亀を冷たい水に入れてくれました。
"I am sorry for asking so suddenly. Could you please put this turtle in that tank?" Mai asked. The old man was a little surprised, but said "Sure" and put the turtle in the cold water for her.
亀はきれいな水の中で、気持ちよさそうにゆっくりと泳ぎ始めました。すると、近くにいた子どもたちが、「あ、亀がいる！」と言って、お店に集まってきました。
The turtle started swimming slowly in the clean water, looking like it felt good. Then, the nearby children said, "Ah, there's a turtle!" and gathered at the shop.
子どもたちは水槽の中の亀を見て大喜びしました。そして、一緒に来ていた親たちも、金魚すくいのお金を払い始めました。暇だったおじいさんは、急にとても忙しくなりました。
The children were overjoyed to see the turtle in the tank. And the parents who came with them also started paying money for goldfish scooping. The old man, who had been free, suddenly became very busy.
おじいさんは嬉しそうに笑って、マイに「ありがとう」と言いました。マイは、おじいさんに亀を助けてもらってよかったと安心しました。亀は安全な水の中で、静かに休んでいました。
The old man smiled happily and said "Thank you" to Mai. Mai was relieved, glad that she got the old man to help the turtle. The turtle was resting quietly in the safe water.
