9月1日は「防災の日」です。100年以上前、関東地方で大きい地震があって、たくさんの人が亡くなりました。
北海道増毛町の小学校では、地震で津波が来たときに困らないように逃げる訓練をしました。
小学校は海の近くにあります。専門家は、大きい地震がおこると高さ15m以上の津波が来ると言っています。
このため、子どもたちは高い場所まで走りました。みんな、20分ぐらいで高さ42mのところに着きました。
6年生の男の子は「本当の地震のときも逃げることができるようにしたいです」と話しました。

At an elementary school in Mashike Town, Hokkaido, students practiced evacuating to avoid trouble when a tsunami comes after an earthquake. The elementary school is located near the sea. Experts say that if a large earthquake occurs, a tsunami over 15 meters high could come. For this reason, the children ran to a high place. Everyone reached a height of 42 meters in about 20 minutes. A sixth-grade boy said, 'I want to be able to evacuate during a real earthquake as well.'
