放課後の学校で、レオは顔を青くしていました。人生最大の失敗をしてしまったのです。なんと、好きな人へのラブレターを間違えてタナカ先生の下駄箱に入れてしまったのです。
In the school after classes, Leo's face turned pale. He had made the biggest mistake of his life. Unbelievably, he accidentally put the love letter intended for his crush into Mr. Tanaka's shoe locker.
「頼む、ケン！先生が来る前に取り戻したいんだ。」レオは親友に頼み込みました。ケンは「しょうがないなあ」と言ってレオのお願いを引き受けました。
"Please, Ken! I want to get it back before the teacher comes." Leo pleaded with his best friend. Ken said, "I guess I have no choice," and accepted Leo's request.
作戦は簡単です。ケンが大きな声を出して周りの人の気を引くのです。彼は突然、お腹を押さえて叫びました。「うわあ、痛い！誰か助けてくれ！」
The plan is simple. Ken will draw the attention of the people around him by making a loud noise. He suddenly clutched his stomach and shouted, "Ow, it hurts! Someone help me!"
ケンの演技は大げさに見えましたが、効果はとてもありました。周りの人達が集まってきます。その間に、レオはこっそり、職員室の入り口へ向かいました。
Ken's acting seemed exaggerated, but it was very effective. The people around gathered. In the meantime, Leo stealthily headed toward the entrance of the staff room.
心臓がドキドキしています。誰も見ていないことを確認して、レオは先生の下駄箱に手を伸ばしました。「あった！まだ戻っていない。」
His heart is pounding. After confirming that no one was watching, Leo reached into the teacher's shoe locker. "Found it! He hasn't come back yet."
しかし、ラブレターの封筒を掴んだ時です。後ろから低い声が聞こえました。「そこで何をしているんだ？」レオの動きがピタリと止まりました。
But it was just as he grabbed the love letter's envelope. A low voice was heard from behind. "What are you doing there?" Leo's movement stopped dead.
ビクビクしながら振り返ると、タナカ先生が立っていました。学校で一番厳しい国語の先生です。レオは怖くて声が出ませんでした。
Trembling with fear, he turned around to find Mr. Tanaka standing there. He is the strictest Japanese teacher in the school. Leo was so scared that his voice wouldn't come out.
「それは私の下駄箱にあった手紙だな？」先生は鋭い目で、レオの手にある封筒を見ました。レオは正直に頷くしかありません。
"That is the letter that was in my shoe locker, isn't it?" The teacher looked at the envelope in Leo's hand with sharp eyes. Leo had no choice but to nod honestly.
先生は黙って封筒を取り上げて、手紙の中身を読み始めました。レオは「これで停学になる」と絶望しました。「もう終わりだ....」
The teacher silently took the envelope and began reading the contents of the letter. Leo despaired, thinking, "I'm going to be suspended for this." "It's all over..."
長い沈黙が続きます。先生の眉間にしわが寄って、レオは冷や汗が止まりません。どれほど怒られるのでしょうか。
A long silence continued. A wrinkle formed between the teacher's eyebrows, and Leo could not stop his cold sweat. How much will he be scolded?
すると、先生は赤ペンを取り出しました。「ふむ……気持ちは伝わるけど、言葉遣いがダメだな」レオは驚いて顔を上げました。
Then, the teacher took out a red pen. "Hmm... your feelings come through, but your wording is no good." Leo raised his head in surprise.
先生はラブレターに赤字を入れ始めました。「ここは『好意を抱いています』と書くほうが賢く見える。漢字も間違っているぞ。」
The teacher began to make corrections in red ink on the love letter. "It would look smarter to write 'I harbor affection for you' here. Also, your kanji is wrong."
「国語の教師として、こんな文章は見逃せません。」先生は真剣な顔で、文法のミスを次々と直していきました。
"As a Japanese teacher, I cannot overlook such writing." With a serious face, the teacher corrected the grammatical mistakes one after another.
「はい。これを見て書き直してきなさい。今日の宿題だ。」と言って、先生は真っ赤になった手紙をレオに返しました。
"Yes. Take this and rewrite it. It's today's homework," the teacher said, handing the letter now covered in red back to Leo.
レオは呆然と手紙を見つめました。ラブレターは作文の課題に変わってしまったのです。「……はい、頑張ります。」と彼は答えました。
Leo stared at the letter in a daze. The love letter had turned into a composition assignment. "……Yes, I’ll do my best," he replied.
