A student trains for the perilous fugu chef's license exam.
JLPT N4 stories are longer and bring in te-form, casual speech, conditionals, and chained verbs. The narratives start adding slight twists — family, hobbies, work, and school told with more nuance.
タケシは高校生でした。ある日、父と一緒にレストランでふぐを食べました。ふぐは日本で有名な魚です。とても美味しいと言われています。
Takeshi was a high school student. One day, he ate fugu at a restaurant together with his father. Fugu is a famous fish in Japan. It is said to be very delicious.
でも、ふぐには毒があります。料理人が間違えたら、人が死ぬかもしれません。危ないのに、日本人はふぐを食べます。タケシは不思議に思いました。
But fugu has poison. If the chef makes a mistake, people might die. Even though it is dangerous, Japanese people eat fugu. Takeshi thought it was strange.
家に帰って、ふぐについて調べました。毒はとても強いです。ふぐ料理人になるためには、特別な免許が必要でした。タケシは料理人になりたいと思いました。
He went home and researched fugu. The poison is very strong. In order to become a fugu chef, a special license was necessary. Takeshi thought that he wanted to become a chef.
高校を卒業しました。料理学校に入りました。免許を取るためには、2年か3年勉強しなければなりません。タケシは頑張ることにしました。
He graduated from high school. He entered a cooking school. In order to get the license, he must study for two or three years. Takeshi decided to do his best.
毎日練習しました。ふぐのどこに毒があるか覚えなければなりませんでした。肝臓には触ってはいけません。間違えてはいけません。とても難しかったです。
He practiced every day. He had to remember where the poison is in the fugu. He must not touch the liver. He must not make a mistake. It was very difficult.
でも、タケシは練習を続けました。ちゃんと勉強しないと、お客さんが死ぬかもしれません。料理人は大切な仕事だと思いました。
But Takeshi continued practicing. If he doesn’t study properly, the customers might die. He thought that being a chef is an important job.
3年後、試験の日が来ました。本物のふぐを料理しなければなりませんでした。毒を全部取らなければいけません。少しでも間違えたら、不合格です。
Three years later, the day of the exam came. He had to cook real fugu. He must remove all of the poison. If he makes even a small mistake, he fails.
タケシは緊張しました。でも、ゆっくりと丁寧にふぐを切りました。試験官が見ました。やっと免許をもらうことができました。タケシは嬉しかったです。
Takeshi was nervous. But he slowly and carefully cut the fugu. The examiner watched. At last, he was able to receive the license. Takeshi was happy.
今、タケシはふぐ料理人です。毎回、注意深く料理を作ります。間違えてはいけないと思っています。お客さんが安全に食べられるように頑張っています。
Now, Takeshi is a fugu chef. Every time, he makes the dishes carefully. He thinks that he must not make a mistake. He is doing his best so that the customers can eat safely.
ふぐ料理人になるのは簡単ではありません。でも、努力を続ければ、夢を叶えることができます。それがふぐ料理人の誇りです。
Becoming a fugu chef is not easy. But if you continue to make efforts, you can make your dream come true. That is the pride of a fugu chef.
